Eastern State Penitentiary
Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 as a utopian bet that solitary confinement plus a Bible would manufacture penitence. Instead it manufactured isolation trauma at industrial scale. The radial cellblocks—spokes from a central hub—became a global prison export. Al Capone did time here. “Slick Willie” Sutton did too. It closed in 1971 and now sits as a stabilized ruin that moonlight as one of America’s favorite haunted destinations.
